Quote

Men are not hanged for stealing horses, but that horses may not be stolen.
George Savile 'Marquis of Halifax'
Didn't work. The horses still get stolen. Try again. Why do you keep hanging men for it? Do you find that perhaps you have forgotten why, really, you are hanging men? If I do one thing desiring a result and discover I don't get the result I desired perhaps I should try a different thing to get the result. What is it when I keep doing the thing that didn't work, insanity.

That quote is genteel veneer over the truth. In short, a lie. Men are hung for revenge.

All law is about control really.

Rational men believe in deterrence; that fear of punishment will prevent people from doing things society thinks they should not. And for the most part, this is so. In a country such as ours, where there are so many more have-nots than haves, when so much wealth and so many commodities are dangled before their eyes, what keeps people from doing what they did in the South after Katrina? Simple deterrence, fear of the consequences, of loss of life or personal freedom.

Thus, men are not hanged for stealing horses, they are hanged to deter more and more men from stealing horses.

The point I was trying to make, very indirectly, was that deterrence doesn't really work and that addressing the root causes is what is required. In most cases that means structuring the rules of the society for better equality of opportunity.

But then you knew I was a progressive.

Not only progressive but an eternal optimist. It would be fan-freaking-tastic to think that we could give equality of opportunity and that would solve the problem. I, being the eternal pessimist, say that there will always be people that are just plain lazy no matter the opportunity and will covet and steal what other people have. Therefore we need to have some form of deterrence to at least try and keep these people in check.

You know dude, you think way to deeply about the subject. I'll never catch up.

I'm just plain lazy I guess. Easy to be lazy when all I have to do is spend Grandpa's money. Bless his departed soul. Oh, the life.

Is this you, or did someone else respond to my post? Either that or your making fun of my tiny little intellect and laziness.
