A new scientific truth does not triumph by convincing its opponents and making them see the light, but rather because its opponents eventually die, and a new generation grows up that is familiar with it.The same is true of economic theory, of political theory and practice, of cultural expression, of social organization. This way, the way you see around you and understand, is not all that might have been, is not all that might be, someone among us will see another way and gradually that way will replace this one. If I live long enough I will see it too, if my eyes are still open to possibilities I could not imagine myself. For a long time I have known that something we cannot imagine will replace what we think is the best possible way. The kings could not imagine a day when we would vote for our leaders. Divine Right was the best way before the thinkers of those days. Which reminds me of another quote (so this this a related two-fer)
Max Planck Scientific Autobiography
All is for the best in the best of possible worlds.
Francois Voltaire Candide
