1. Quit asking for things.
2. If you do ask, don't expect to get it.
3. *Do* expect to get yelled at.

Well unlearn them thar lessons. Although I had considered adding a bit about what to do when my 1 and 2 don't work.

Oh if it was only that easy. Especially when you add in the one my "peers" taught me:

"If you like or want something, letting people know gives them another way to hurt you."

I'm 50, dunno if I'm gonna live long enough to get rid of all the [censored] that got beaten into me as a kid. <sigh>
